Student Transfers Among WICHE States

This site presents data from the National Student Clearinghouse on the number of students who transferred in the 15 WICHE states – both in-state and out-of-state – from 2006 to 2010. The fall 2006 cohort totaled 668,583 students, made up of first-time students of any age who began their postsecondary studies in the fall of 2006, both full-time and part-time students, and excludes students who received any degree or certificate from a two- or four-year institution prior to 2006. The WICHE region cohort, which is based on Title IV IPEDS data, is not the usual cohort that campuses track for the Student Right-to-Know and Campus Security Act. That cohort does not include part-time students. By design the WICHE data set is intended to provide a clear idea of the transfer pattern of students in the WICHE states.

A total of 224,392 students in the WICHE region – or 33.6 percent – transferred during the five-year period. The majority of students – 84.64 percent of two-year students and 74.71 percent of four-year students – transferred within their own state, meaning a little over 20 percent transferred across state lines. About 30 percent of those students transferred to another state in the WICHE region.
