Providing opportunities for students to gain science knowledge and skills is critical to our country. Students living in rural communities often do not have access to the scientific equipment and capabilities available in larger institutions because of limited funds available to purchase high-end laboratory equipment. Also, unemployed and underserved workers looking for ways to improve themselves do not have the time to expend on advancing their education in traditional classroom settings.
NANSLO provides technological solutions that address many of the barriers that would otherwise prevent these low-income, first generation college students who are at risk from completing their degrees or pursue science-based careers due to challenges such as work and family obligations or living in rural areas that limit their access to traditional classes.
Currently, NANSLO offers students in science classes the opportunity to complete experimental activities at a distance using remote web-based science labs. In the future, NANSLO plans to expand the activities delivered using this technology as well as developing other creative science solutions designed to reach students where they live.
NANSLO’s vision is to reach these students, allowing them to attain their educational goals, while staying in their communities and meeting their personal commitments.
NANSLO will soon be launching a blog for dialogue on creative science solutions at NANSLO and around the world. The NANSLO project wikis also provide a great deal of information on the curriculum and scientific activities it is working on or has completed.
