The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) has adopted new regulations that require contractors to set a target of having 7 percent of their work force be comprised of employees with disabilities. The most immediate impact on higher education of this change to Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is that more employers will come to campuses seeking a fully diverse slate of candidates, including those with disabilities.
In this session, Evans and Marks, experts in recruitment and retention of nursing students from diverse backgrounds, including those with disabilities, discussed strategies used to recruit students with disabilities into nursing and allied health programs and some of the strategies to remove barriers that were identified at a roundtable sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy in collaboration with the National Organization of Nurses with Disabilities.

Kapiʻolani Community College is the state's largest comprehensive community college with technical, occupational, and professional programs in health sciences, emergency medical services, nursing, business education, food service and hospitality education. It offers the state's most successful university transfer program as well as a well-respected STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) program. Nationally, Kapiʻolani Community College has been recognized for its accredited programs in health sciences and education for emergency medical services.
In September 2011, it was announced that Kapiʻolani Community College was a TAACCCT grant recipient. In 2013, Kapiʻolani Community College was awarded a $2,507,462 TAACCCTT grant of for culinary and health programs. O'Hagan facilitated the development of a new career pathway program working with the Hawaii State Departments of Health and Education.
In 2014, the College was the recipient of another TAACCCT grant in the amount of over $1 million – one of seven community colleges across Hawaii that received a total of $10 million in TAACCCT funding.
Hagan spoke about the college's approach to creating a proactive environment to address workforce needs and focusing on both student needs and employer needs. She discussed alignment with lifelong learning goals for students and creating a partnership with them. For the long term, building career pathways that students can follow through their career that has on and off ramps creates the connection between students and the college. Building relationships with employers and workforce is critical element. And implementing defined connections, career pathways, and processes within a college are key for successful student placement and recruitment.

If you’ve developed material that you want to share online with the students you advise but don’t know how to do it, this webinar is for you. Susan Mircovich, Online Chemistry Faculty and Instructional Designer, University of Alaska Kenai Peninsula College, will show you some options for sharing your material online. She will also offer some tips for creating effective presentations and demonstrate several methods for uploading PowerPoints and videos to the web. This is intended to be an interactive session with plenty of time for questions. A “printable” summary of the options discussed was provided.
Linda Faucheux, associate director for counseling in the office of career services at the University of Colorado Boulder, and a licensed professional counselor, shared insights on contemplative career coaching, and facilitated interactive sessions where career coaches could apply this knowledge, in preparation for helping students in career transition phases. The day concluded with identifying a common list of roles and responsibilities of a career coach and the specific roles and responsibilities they perform at their institutions.
Scott Vandever from Kuder, the company developing the allied health career hub, and Julia Pirnack from College in Colorado, who is leading that effort, provided career coaches with a guided tour of the extensive capabilities of the new allied health career hub being launched for CHEO. The career coaches accessed the career hub, completed several assessment tools, reviewed their own results, and found how they could explore careers based on this information. Career coaches brainstormed ways of encouraging students to use this valuable tool as they gain the skills to transition into the allied health careers offered through the CHEO initiative. In this webinar, Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations' Education and Employment Research Center , the third-party evaluator for a U.S. Department of Labor TAACCCT Round 1 grant, presented findings and observations on the role of career coaches in the Colorado Online Energy Training Consortium (COETC) initiative.
Although not the primary goals of this grant, two perhaps less explicit goals were to increase student retention rates and facilitate students’ transition from degree and career and technical education (CTE) certificate programs into the job market. Similar to the CHEO initiative, each college participating in the COETC initiative employed a career coach to:
Guide students through career exploration and present energy training opportunities.
Advise and support students as they completed development education needed to succeed in the energy programs.
Help students navigate the college’s processes.
Provide referrals and support for nonacademic issues.
This research looks closely at the differing role of the career coach at each consortium college, the promising practices that emerged from the career coach position, and some of the challenges encountered by coaches. The report also makes some recommendations for the career coach role.

Cynthia has trained people in the skills of professional coaching since 1994 and is really good at it! In this webinar, she used the Core Competencies of the International Coach Federation to expand participants knowledge through discussion of new ideas and ways of working with those they coach. This interactive session centered on participants experiences, observations, and reflections, and dialog was focused on applying these in the support of their students finding a truly fulfilling career path vs. just getting a job.

This webinar explored the Denali Trainee Success Program, a grant funded project, whose three overarching goals were to: (1) address rural Alaska allied health workforce needs; (2) improve access for rural students to the University’s allied health programs; and (3) engage in closer and ongoing partnerships with rural employers.
This project laid the groundwork for on-going student support for students enrolled in allied health programs at UAA. Funding supported research to identify the root causes for low enrollment and why students did not succeed in their program of study. Hernandez discussed several barriers identified in that research and how UAA has applied that information to remove those barriers to help students succeed in their allied health programs.

Career coaches like nothing more than helping others, so it's troubling when clients disappear after the first session. This webinar provided participants with a clear understanding of the concrete steps to take during the initial client intake to get clients curious and engaged enough to stick with the process. Karen also addressed the additional challenge of engaging clients when we are working with them remotely.
