Tools for Assessing Administrative Holds at Your Institution

Join WICHE, AACRAO, students, and institutional staff and leadership, as we release online tools that encapsulate what was learned from a year-long collaboration of 12 public institutions who assessed holds on their campuses. Hear why it’s important to look at and refresh how you use holds at your institution to support student success and institutional health, and how to use the tools developed from the No Holding Back project to jumpstart your own assessment.

Please contact Olivia Tufo with any questions or if you need accommodation to attend this virtual webcast.

The State of Administrative and Student Success Holds

It can be difficult to get the attention of a college student. Professors can always connect with students in class. However, advisors and administrators have few means to command attention, especially if calling, texting, emailing or using the postal service aren’t successful. The ability to use holds to prompt a student to take an action is one of the few resources in an institution’s toolkit. Recent research reveals the ubiquity of this practice, but also the limitations. Panelists from the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO), Education Commission of the States (ECS), Ithaka S+R, and National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) discussed the latest research on administrative holds policies and practices at the state, system, and institution-level.

Moderator: WICHE Panelists: Mary Fulton, Senior Policy Analyst, ECS; Wendy Kilgore, Director of Research, AACRAO; Bryan Dickson, Director of Student Financial Services and Educational Programs, NACUBO; James Ward, Ithaka S+R

Understanding Fentanyl

The Mountain Plains Rural Opioid Technical Assistance Center is proud to host Utah State University Extension’s HEART Initiative for the first of a two-webinar series geared toward educators, presenting information regarding illicitly manufactured fentanyl (IMF). Recent data show that IMF is an increasing contributor to the high rates of opioid overdose. Most worrisome among communities is the potential impact it is having on school-aged youth who may not be aware of the risks. This webinar will provide a background on IMF, signs and symptoms of use and consequences, review current trends on use and prevalence among youth, and discuss the do’s and don’ts of addressing and preventing substance misuse among youth by utilizing evidence-based prevention strategies. We will also review campaigns, toolkits, and other resources that school professionals can use.
