Scenario 22: Advisor Evaluates situation & explores alternatives (if academic progress is not satisfactory)

 Goal
  •  Find a course of study that matches student’s academic abilities

Pre-Conditions
  • Advisor has verified unsatisfactory progress by the student in his/her current semester, both within his/her major, and in electives
  • Advisor has checked student’s total collegiate academic progress to determine his/her status.

Advising System

1.

Advisor requests student academic profile, academic records, non-academic records

 

2.

 

System supplies requested data, including any existing deficiencies

3.

Advisor reviews data, requests data on other major courses of study that may match student’s academic abilities

 

4.

 

System supplies requested data, including any remediation (retakes, etc.) required by other major courses of study, to address existing deficiencies

5.

Advisor compares student’s academic profile with new data, posts appropriate notes to the file as to those which seem to be viable alternatives

 

6.

 

System updates file to reflect new data

Post-Conditions
  •  Advisor has one or more alternative paths to consider which match the student’s academic abilities*

*NOTE: Responsibility for exploring other major courses of study resides primarily with the student. The above 
scenario relates only to the preparation work on the part of the advisor to assist the student in the process of 
finding a more suitable or appropriate field of study.

 Scenario 23: Advisor refers student to appropriate alternate counseling /advisors

 Goal
  •  Assist student to find and pursue educational objectives that match his/her academic abilities

Pre-Conditions
  • Student has made an appointment with the advisor, and is present either physically or virtually
  • Advisor has verified unsatisfactory progress with the student in his/her current semester
  • Advisor has evaluated the student’s academic situation and has explored alternative courses of study
  • Student has explored other courses of study

Advising System

1.

Advisor, student compare notes concerning current situation and possible alternative courses of study. Advisor requests specific degree requirements for those alternatives in which the student expresses interest

 

2.

 

System supplies requested data

3.

Advisor, student compare degree requirements & make preliminary choice of one or more alternatives. Advisor notifies appropriate college/department to arrange a meeting with prospective new advisor

 

4.

Advisor recommends career, aptitude or other counseling to help student match educational plans to his/her academic ability.

Advisor arranges counseling session with appropriate counseling service, then updates student file accordingly

 

5.

 

System receives new data, updates file accordingly

6.

New college/department agrees to appointment (based either on Advisor recommendation, or on additional counseling results and recommendations). Original Advisor posts appropriate information to file, grants access to new college/department advisor

 

7.

 

System updates files, notifies old and new advisor of the changes

Post-Conditions
  •  Student finds and pursues educational objectives that match his/her academic abilities
