WCET Wins Hewlett Grant |
| |
The Western Cooperative for Educational
Telecommunications (WCET) has been awarded a $1.5 million
grant by the William and Flora Hewlett
Foundation for the project "Developing the Tools,
Policies and Models Critical to the Electronic Delivery of
Higher Education." The goal of the three-year project
is to develop specific tools that will help higher education
institutions in the integration of online learning and the
World Wide Web, aiding both teachers and learners. "Developing
the Tools" includes three related projects:
-
"E-Learning Technologies: Web Resource for Comparisons,"
will provide a resource to help educators analyze and
compare vendor-produced course-management tools, other
online software products, online providers of student
services, and e-learning policies. The project is using
the work of Bruce Landon, faculty at Douglas College
in British Columbia as a model for providing comparisons.
His popular Landonline
site, which compares course management systems, assists
decision-makers in sorting through the many options
available.
-
The second project will perform research on a couple
issues to determine if more in-depth attention on these
issues is needed. The first will examine the need for
independent evaluations of online courses that are available
for institutions to license and offer as their own.
The second will research the need for experimentally
developed guidelines for creating appropriate environments
for distance learners.
-
The third project will be a partnership of the Hewlett
Foundation and WCET, with their staffs working together
to study issues that are likely to have an impact on
the integration of technology into higher education.
