Steps in Applying for Financial Aid
Complete and mail the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA application is available in the Eastern Financial Aid Office, your local high school or the Federal Student Aid Information Center. Apply as soon as possible AFTER January 1, for the next academic year. The Eastern Oregon University Title IV Code is 003193. You will need this code on the FAFSA form when applying. You will need specific tax information to complete the FAFSA, or you can estimate if youhave not yet filed your taxes. Your application should be processed in approximately four weeks from the time that you mail it. If you have applied for financial aid during the previous year, you should receive a renewal application in the mail. Complete and return this similar to the FAFSA. You can also apply by using the FAFSA on the Web. The address is http://www.fafsa.ed.gov
Make sure you use a computer with a printer so you can print and sign the signature page. Without this signature page, your electronic application will not be processed.
You will receive a Student Aid Report(SAR) in the mail. It will report the information from your application and your Expected Family Contribution (the number used in determining your eligibility for federal student aid). If changes are needed to your report, make them on Part 2, and return it to the address provided on the form. Keep a copy of your SAR.
Eastern Oregon University does not require that you return your SAR to the school. Eastern will receive this information electronically if they are one of the schools listed on your SAR. Your financial aid will be determined on the basis of that information.

Verification
When you receive your SAR back, it will indicate if you have been selected for verification. If you are selected for verification, you must produce your records for the information on the FAFSA application to prove that the information you reported is correct. Be sure you keep all documents, and be sure that the information you report is accurate. Check with the Financial Aid Office to see what documents you will need to turn in.
If that information changes after you apply, you must update it so that it's correct on the date you sign your SAR or certify your application information. Otherwise, you won't be able to receive federal student aid. The Statement of Updated Information on the back of Part 1 of your SAR gives the information that must be updated.

If you use the budget for the 1999-00 academic year, we start with $9821. From this, we will subtract the Expected Family Contribution (EFC), to determine financial need. We will thne attempt to fill the need with need based funds. The fund types and amounts will vary based on need, timeliness of application, year in school, and other factors. While student loans are an increasing part of a student's financial aid package, Eastern Oregon University attempts to fill need with other types of aid prior to filling with loans. Most students will receive some type of loan in their award package, we make every effort to fund students in grants and work programs when possible.

Timeline
1.Student and parents apply with the federal application (FAFSA), or renewal application as soon as possible after January 1st.
2.Student applies for scholarships through Eastern and/or outside sources. (Eastern's deadline being February 15.)
3.Student receives the Student Aid Report (SAR) within about 4 weeks of applying. This document should be examined CAREFULLY, to determine accuracy of information, and if additional action is needed.
4.Student is notified if recipient of any Eastern scholarships by around mid-March.
5.If student applies early, and Eastern has all documents required, student is notified of award package sometime during Spring (most likely during March or April).
6.Student returns award letter to Eastern's Office of Enrollment Services, saying whether the student accepts or declines the award package.
7.If Federal Stafford loans are part of the financial aid package, the student will receive the promissory note in the mail. This must be completed, and returned to the lender or guarantee agency. Instructions on where to send the promissory note will be sent as well.
8.The loan funds are sent to Eastern electronically to be released to the student's account when needed. First-time borrowers in the first year of their program (Freshman), must wait 30 days after the start of their program to pick up Stafford Loan funds. Arrangements can be made if this 30 day delay will cause hardship for the student. Please see the Financial Aid Office if you will need assistance during this period.
9.First time borrowers must go through an entrance interview prior to picking up their funds. This is the requirement for both Federal Stafford Loans and Federal Perkins Loans.
10.The student pays fees during the first 2 weeks of classes.
