Admission Requirements for Incoming Freshmen

Admission to West Virginia University is based on a combination of high school grade-point average and ACT or SAT scores. Each application is reviewed individually by a member of the admissions staff. Don't forget - all applications must be accompanied by an official transcript.

    West Virginia residents must have at least a 2.0 grade-point average and either a composite enhanced ACT score of 19 or a combined recentered SAT score of 910 to be considered for admission.

    Nonresidents must have a 2.25 grade-point average and either an ACT composite enhanced score of 20 or a total recentered SAT score of 950.


To be considered for freshman admission, a student must successfully complete the following high school credits:

  • 4 units of English (including grammar, composition, and literature)
  • 3 units of social studies (Example: U.S. History, Sociology, Psychology)
  • 3 units of college preparatory mathematics (Algebra I and II and Plane Geometry)
  • 2 units of laboratory science (Example: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or other laboratory courses)
  • Two units of a foreign language are strongly recommended. Suggested electives are computer science, fine arts, and humanities.


The College of Engineering and Mineral Resources requires that incoming freshmen have 3 units of high school mathematics as well as ACT and/or SAT scores based on the high school GPAs listed in the table below.

The Pre-Computer Science ansd Pre-Statistics programs in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences require three and one-half units of advanced mathematics (two units of algebra, one unit of geometry, and one-half unit of trigonometry).
