ARTHUR J. ROTHKOPF serves as senior vice president and counselor to the president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. His responsibilities include work on several initiatives, including workforce development and education and the chamber’s program on capital markets and corporate governance. Prior to joining the chamber staff in July 2005, Rothkopf served for 12 years as president of Lafayette College in Easton, PA. Before this, he served in a number of posts: as deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation, appointed by President George H.W. Bush and confirmed by the Senate; as general counsel of the department (also a Senate-confirmed position); and as a senior partner in the Washington law firm of Hogan & Hartson. He began his career as a lawyer for the U.S. Treasury Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Rothkopf serves as a member of the Commission on the Future of Higher Education, established by Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, as well as on a number of boards. He earned his B.A. degree from Lafayette and his law degree from Harvard.
