Policies on Faculty Reward Structures: Report from the States

Which Elements Are Important

HOW important are faculty reward issues such as tenure or professional development opportunities this year? Western states indicate the most important elements are post-tenure review, contract renewal, merit pay and salary increases, and promotion.
Tenure and post-tenure review are the two most important issues for four-year institutions in Colorado and for the entire higher education system in Utah.
In Nevada, the allocation of professional duties is the dominant issue for four-year institutions; tenure and professional development opportunities are very important for two-year institutions.
The options most important for four-year institutions are merit pay and salary increases and post-tenure review.
Policy options most important for community colleges are merit pay and salary increases, contract renewal, and promotion.
Contract renewal is rated relatively unimportant by those responsible for four-year institutions and leave-without-pay by those responsible for community colleges.
Incentive pay is rated the least important among the policy options.
