Dr. Fisher’s Talk on Recovery
Starting at age 25, Dr. Fisher was hospitalized several times and diagnosed with schizophrenia. Despite some setbacks, he was able to recover, earn a medical degree and become a psychiatrist. He is presently a community psychiatrist at Riverside MH Center, and Executive Director of the National Empowerment Center. (www.power2u.org). He was a commissioner on the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health.
He will highlight the values, philosophy, and practices that have enabled him and others to recover. He knows from personal experience that no matter how severe a person’s distress, there is always a person inside. When provided the recovery relationships, principles, and resources, the person inside is capable of relating and regaining control over their life.
Dr. Fisher and NEC have developed the more comprehensive Empowerment Model of Recovery and Development. Unlike the pessimistic, dependency-fostering aspects of the traditional model, the Empowerment Model emphasizes the importance of hope, connecting, self-determination, self-help, and living a meaningful life. He has found that when people gain their true voice they can become full participants of their community and recover.
