  • Affiliated with over 500 colleges and universities in the U.S. and throughout the world


  • Provides internships and academic seminars to 1,500 students annually


  • Has over 30,000 alumni, 25% of whom are employed in public service careers


  • Coordinates housing facilities and provides resident life assistance


  • Provides comprehensive, direct guidance to students with a 25:1 student to program supervisor ratio.  The Washington Center has 55 full-time staff members.

The Washington Center’s Affiliation Agreement with a college or university indicates:
  • Who will serve as the campus liaison


  • What credit the students will earn


  • How the students’ fees will be paid

To help make students aware of our opportunities, The Washington Center:
  • Distributes materials to liaisons for prospective students to review
  • Visits the campus to meet with faculty, staff and students
  • Communicates via e-mail with prospective students

With liaison approval, students then apply to The Washington Center
  • Over 1,700 this year, from 400 institutions
  • Second-semester sophomores and above
  • Minimum 2.75 GPA; average over 3.3 GPA
  • 20% international
  • 20% underrepresented populations

Students in all Washington Center programs have an experience of three basic parts:
  • The internship


  • An academic course


  • The Washington Forum

The Washington Center internship:
  • Tailored to the student’s interests
  • Placement in the federal government, the business sector or a nonprofit organization
  • Substantial, entry level professional experience
  • Carefully supervised and evaluated

"Most institutions award 12 to..."
  • Most institutions award 12 to 16 credits for spring and fall semesters and 6 to 9 for summer term
  • Individual institutions can add requirements such as independent studies, research papers, etc.
  • Institutions determine grades based on recommendations and portfolio

  • For Students
  •     A chance to “test-drive” their major and career; explore their interests; acquire experience and advantage in competition for employment and admission to graduate or professional school; gain confidence and focus.


  •         For the Institution
  •     Supports multiple agendas: the recruitment and retention of able, motivated, and diverse students; the strengthening of honors options; the promotion of civic engagement; setting future alumni on professional trajectories they might not otherwise attain.
