"Multiple studies have consistently shown the typical one-time conference/workshop didactic training modality is not effective in promoting adoption of new clinical or administrative skills. Key features of the WICHE mental health system of care training are that it is designed and conducted according to adult learning principles—learning is interactive, relevant and practical." INITIATIVES FOR
HEALTHCARE AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH STAKEHOLDERS

Several of WICHE’s programs and initiatives address the needs of Western states to develop more health care professionals, particularly in medicine, dentistry, mental and behavioral health, and other fields. The Professional Student Exchange Program (PSEP) enables students to enroll in selected out-of-state professional programs when particular fields of study are not available at public institutions in their home states. WICHE’s Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP) offers master’s and Ph.D students in the western region affordable access to health care related education and includes graduate programs in nursing, public health, and many other health care sciences. The WICHE Mental Health Program is a recognized leader in rural and frontier mental health, cultural competence, and telemedicine/web-based health. And a new program, the WICHE Internet Course Exchange (WICHE ICE) offers web-based, education-at-a-distance in fields such as rural social work and nursing.
