Richard M. Swanson, Ph.D., J.D.
Forensic Psychologist
Metropolitan State College of Denver
Dr. Swanson earned his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado’s Department of Psychology and his J.D. from Denver University’s College of Law. He has served as the Director of Research of the Center for the Study of Crime, Delinquency and Corrections of Southern Illinois University (1971-1972); Associate Professor of Psychology and Clinical Psychology and Director of Criminal Justice Studies at the University of Florida (1972-1987); and Chairman and Professor of the Department of Law and Mental Health at the University of South Florida (1987-1991). Dr. Swanson has been involved in corrections programs planning, clinical administration, and research since 1968 and is author of numerous articles on crime and corrections issues. He served as Acting Director of Florida’s Alachua County Corrections Department from 1975 to 1976; Chief of Mental Health Diagnostics for Colorado’s Department of Corrections from 1991 to 1994.
Dr. Swanson is the principal architect of the Colorado Youthful Offender System and has served as its chief of Operations (1994-1999). He is licensed as a psychologist in Florida and Colorado and is a member of the American Bar and the Florida Bar Associations. This multi-disciplinary background serves Dr. Swanson well in his role as a forensic psychologist and professor focusing upon issues of law, psychology, and mental health services for offenders.
Dr. Swanson currently serves as:
- Visiting Professor of Psychology at the Metropolitan State College of Denver (2001-present).
- Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center (1992-present).
- Director of the PsyLaw Institute, a consulting firm focusing upon crime prevention, juvenile justice, correctional programs, and mental health services (1987-present)
