Mental Health
WICHE’s Mental Health Program is a nucleus for researching national, regional, and state mental health policy, collaborating with Western states to provide technical assistance in such areas as system reform, workforce development, program evaluation, cultural competence, and service integration and innovation to achieve quality care.
This year, the Mental Health Program continued its support of the Western States Decision Support Group (WSDSG), which enables interstate collaboration for improving data infrastructure and performance measurement in the public mental health systems. The WSDSG conducted three regional conferences, focused upon collaborative activities and professional peer knowledge exchange among state mental health program evaluators and system planners. Major program activities focused on assessing the prevalence of mental illness in the West, workforce development to ensure the deployment of competent mental health professionals, and the development of technical assistance activities in the area of evidence-based practice.
The Mental Health Program also received approval to pursue a new initiative that will work to increase the numbers of mental health workers in the rural areas of the West, which are severely underserved.
