II. Enhancing Teacher and Counselor Development

This component expands on opportunities for teachers to be trained as AP teachers and to access professional development activities that enhance their effectiveness. Funding through WCALO enables states to serve schools and teachers to attend face-to-face professional development institutes and participate in online courses; other strategies support vertical team development. 

WCALO also collaborated with two universities to develop models for pre-service teacher education and counselor training.

Accelerated Learning Opportunities for Low-Income Students: A Module for Pre-Service Teachers is designed to be adapted by education programs so it can be used in current courses to educate pre-service teachers about accelerated learning and increase the successful participation of low-income students.

The Empowering the School Counselor Institute planning guide is a "how to" manual for convening a professional development institute for middle and high school counselors that focuses on increasing the successful participation of low-income students in accelerated learning opportunities.
