Tuition and Fees in the West:
2001-2002

In 2001-02, tuition and fees at public institutions in the West remained well below national averages. Public 4-year institutions in the region on average charged $2,843, which was $140 or 5.2 percent higher than the previous year. In comparison, the national average was $3,586, an increase of $219 or 6.5 percent. Meanwhile, public 2-year colleges in the region (excluding California) saw a $73 or 5 percent increase, compared to the national average of $104 or 6.1 percent. The ramifications of tuition and fees increases at a time of financial downturn in the states are explored in the context of student financial aid.
