A highlight during WICHE's commission
meeting in Salt Lake City May 19-20 was Utah's celebration of
its 50th Anniversary as a member of WICHE.
WICHE Commissioner Cece Foxley (Commissioner of Higher Education,
Utah System of Higher Education) welcomed approximately 125
celebrants to the anniversary dinner Monday evening, May 19.
From the Varsity Room at Rice-Eccles Stadium (home of the 2002
Winter Olympics), guests were treated to a panoramic view of
the sun setting over Salt Lake City as WICHE Commissioner David
Gladwell (state senator) introduced Gov. Mike Leavitt. Following
Gov. Leavitt's address concerning the value of competency-based
education, WICHE Commissioner George Mantes (Regent, State Board
of Regents) introduced David Longanecker, WICHE's executive
director, who affirmed the mutual benefit of the Utah WICHE
partnership.
Among the Utah guests were former WICHE commissioners Lyle Hillyard,
Dale Zabriskie, Rolfe Kerr, Dorothy Watkiss, Karl Swan; Marjorie
Bennion (daughter of former commissioner Clair Hopkins); Utah
legislators Sen. Ron Allen, Rep. Brad Dee, Rep. Susan Lawrence,
Sen. David Gladwell (also WICHE commissioner), Rep. Bradley
Johnson, and Rep. Kory Holdaway; USHE Presidents Greg Fitch
(Utah College of Applied Technology, also former Idaho WICHE
commissioner), Steve Bennion (Southern Utah University), and
