Dr. Fortney received a PhD in human geography from the University of Iowa in 1992. In 1995, he completed a VA post doctoral fellowship in mental health services research at the HSR&D Center for Mental Health and Outcomes Research in Little Rock. He is currently a core investigator with the VA HSR&D Center for Mental Health and Outcomes Research, and an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry, College of Medicine, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. As principal investigator, he has received grant funding from the VA, NIMH, and NIAAA. Dr. Fortney’s primary research interest is rural mental health services research including the impact of geographic access on quality and outcomes, and telemedicine-based interventions to improve treatment outcomes. His current research focuses on adapting chronic care models of depression treatment for small rural clinics using telemedicine technologies.
