Michigan Alzheimer's Demonstration Program

a federal demonstration program funded by the Administration on Aging and the Health Resources and Services Administration and carried out by the Michigan Department of Community Health with 12 regional community mental health agencies

Program Objective

The program is designed to develop a statewide dementia service network by: (a) increasing the number of in-home respite, adult day care, and other supportive services; (b) expanding the capacity of existing programs; and (c) developing a coordinated approach to service delivery.

Outreach Model

Methods used by collaborating agencies to introduce information about the service needs of people with dementia and the types of help available have included the following strategies:

Ensure that agencies have current information about types of available services.
Offer inservice sessions to local service/civic groups, congregations, and coalitions.
Exchange ideas and provide inservice education by hosting dementia advisory groups.
Enlist the support of individuals and agencies with strong credibility among residents.
